"The Young Mascot" is the first in a series of
five limited-edition prints.
The prints are a fundraiser
for a Hatcher's Run Project
to honor the common soldier.
Each print will depict some aspect of Sallie's life.
Shown here inside his tent is Captain William Terry of Company I, 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, holding up a puppy barely four weeks old. She had been presented to him in the basket shown in the lower left of the drawing by a civilian of West Chester, PA.

In that spring of 1861 in the training camp on the Fairgrounds of West Chester, PA, few if any had any idea of the war that lay ahead. The young recruits saw what lay ahead as an adventure and perhaps a chance to gain some glory.
Into this festive atmosphere came a man with a puppy in a basket. Captain Terry thanked him on behalf of the regiment, made a bed for her under his bunk and fed her soft bread and milk.
Sallie, as she became known, was to share the good times and the hardships of the men. On February 6, 1865, at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, as the War was about to end, she shared the fate of many of the soldiers when she was shot and killed.
The series of prints will trace Sallie's introduction into the Regiment as their Young Mascot until her heroic death under fire at Hatcher's Run.
This fundraiser was organized to raise funds in order to commission Mr. Gary Casteel to sculpt a stature honoring the common soldier and a faithful mascot, Sallie.
