When a Newfoundland dog wandered into the camp of Company F, Sixth Wisconsin Infantry, it was given to officer, Werner Von Bachelle, whose fondness for animals was known. The two became inseparable and were together on September 17, 1862, during the morning battle at Antietam.
While at the farthest point of his companies advance, Captain Bachelle was shot several times. Two days later their bodies were recovered, the dog's body lying across his master's.
Rufus Dawes, then major of the regiment wrote, "...it is probable he is joined in death by his most devoted friend on earth."
